The Philippines is now assured of two medals in this year’s summer Olympics. Since the 1932 Olympics, this will be the first time that the Philippines will be taking home two medals in one Olympic Game
Nesthy Petecio
After defeating Yeni Arias of Colombia in the quarterfinals of women’s boxing, Nesthy is now assured of at least a bronze finish. Comin in her match-up against Arias, Petecio has established herself as one of the favorites to have a podium finish. Especially after defeating top-ranked Lin Yu-Ting of Chines Taipei.
The Davao del Sur native had a solid strategy entering her recent match-up. She landed a resounding hook and a couple of straights that prevented Arias’ aggressive attacks. On the other hand, the Filipina patiently backed down and took her chances.
Petecio will not take on Irma Testa of Italy. Testa will be towering over Petecio with her 5-foot-9 frame. It will be a 7-inch advantage over Petecio’s 5-foot-2 frame. However, it would not be that easy to take out Petacio as she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lin who was as tall as Testa.
